Mediation foremost THE Australian Attorney Gen- eral, Robert McClelland, has emphasized the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) procedures as a means of improving efficiency and reduc- ing the backlog of matters in the court system. While ADR procedures include mediation, conciliation, expert determination, adjudi- cation and arbitration, mediation in particular is being adopted widely across commer- cial, legal, industrial, edu- cational, government and judicial sectors. The Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia (IAMA) is the nation's largest, indepen- dent and most experienced alternative dispute resolution organisation. It has an established repu- tation as Australia's pre- eminent provider of mediation training and as a recognised mediator accreditation body. Founded in 1975, membership includes many of Australia's eminent and experienced ADR professionals from a diverse range of sectors. Retired High Court Judge Michael Kirby is the current president of IAMA. The IAMA Practitioner's Cer- tificate in Mediation is present- ed Australia-wide by nationally accredited instructors. It offers a practice-oriented qualification in mediation, which complies with the Australian National Mediator Standards and with the educational and profes- sional standards requirements for mediator registration in the ACT. Graduates of the IAMA Prac- titioner's Certificate in Mediation gain improved nego- tiation, communication and general conflict resolution skills, learn techniques to make mediations successful and learn key ethical issues for mediation practice. These skills are not only essential for effective mediation, they are invaluable for persons in managerial posi- tions where negotiation and employee relations are in- volved. The IAMA has offices in all states and territories. Ms Majewski has used her voice speaking and singing in choirs both growing up and as an adult. "The speaking voice, like the singing voice, must have rhythm and flow. What I love doing is using that rhythm and flow to help people grow into confident speaker," she said. Ms Majewski's business Speak2us specialises in individ- ual coaching and small group workshops. The individual coa- ching helps people develop and match their speaking style and skills to their speaking purpose and objectives. Finding your own style is important. "We can each develop a way of using our voice that fits us -- our unique voice," she said.
